Netflix Toward the end of Dark, the first of released today, the Scottish comedian pulls the rug out from under his audience. Viewers at home may even be able to hear the air literally being sucked out of the room. He wanted to shock his audience… in order to make them laugh. Taping and releasing two shows simultaneously on Netflix entails a lot of work, so you would think that the comic would be taking an extended vacation at the moment. Not so, for Sloss is set to make his ninth appearance on Conan next Monday, September 17th, on TBS. Later this month, he will begin X, for the next seven months across all of Europe and Australia. Once that tour is finished, he will then come to the United States in February to. Andrew Husband: I imagine things have been pretty busy. Getting any time to relax before the Netflix release? Daniel Sloss: Yeah, so basically the Fringe Festival finished on the 26th of August. Not just Conan, but opening for Chappelle earlier this year and recording one of the specials here. How long have you been doing comedy in America? DS: The first time I did comedy in the States, I think, was about five or six years ago. I was doing the when that was being recorded for TV. That was my first foray into American stuff. I started in Scotland, then I went to London to start doing comedy there. I had to pretty much restart my career then. When I started going over to Australia, I had to establish myself there, too. I mean, come on. If I fail, cut me off. AH: I spoke with when he did his Showtime series about coming to America. DS: I love Romesh. AH: , too, when he did his Netflix specials. They were both talking about this very thing. DS: I think the American circuit is amazing. As I said, a lot of my favorite comics are from there, but we have a very different kind of circuit. In America, comedians will work on their five-minute spots. America is so big. You can get an hour set working that will last you years in America because every state has got a bunch of comedy clubs. There are different ways to do it, too. I would never demean American comedy. Romesh, James, yourself and other comics from the U. DS: I live in Scotland. Why would I leave here? Fifteen years ago, it kind of made more sense, but the thing I have to explain to every casting director and agent in America is this: Airplanes fucking exist. I live five minutes from the airport. I love you, but I study you. None of that means I want to leave where I live. Since I was 18 years old, I would spend four months in Australia every year. I spend at least three months on the road touring in Europe and the U. I know how to deal with them and they will never throw me off, but America is a whole new breed of crazy. AH: Switching gears somewhat, Dark came before Jigsaw, your more recent show, but you returned to it after some time to tape it for Netflix. That must have been a jolt to your system, as my understanding is once a Fringe-based show is done touring, you move on to the next one. DS: We were smarter with the second one. I recorded Jigsaw on the last day I was ever doing it. It was right at the end of the tour. That way we would already have it available. So we filmed it and, fortunately, they bought it. As for Dark, I had to revisit material that was then three years old. We did a run through in New York and it was tough. It was fun to do it again, to breathe new life into it and perform it better than I had three years prior. The thing is, I was going back to jokes that were three years old. I think we cut some of those jokes out of the final edit. I did a bunch of pro-gay material because, at the time, gay marriage was not legal in either America or Australia. For all we know, it will be a nuclear wasteland in a year. You opened for him in San Francisco earlier this year. What was that like? I understand public speaking is a big fear for some people, but because I started so young, I was too stupid to be scared. The arrogance of youth, maybe, but it never registered with me that what I was doing should be terrifying. But with the Chappelle thing, I got a phone call because I was doing the Punch Line and he had booked two shows. They obviously had to push me off, but as a compromise, they asked if I would like to open for Chappelle. But he and his crew were lovely. They made me feel very welcome. I absolutely loved it, even though it was the first time in years I had ever dealt with anything close to nerves… AH: …because of Chappelle? Some audiences are just going to hate me. In this case, it was the San Francisco Punch Line, which is a great club, and I was opening for Chappelle. I want my audience to like me. But this time, bombing felt like it would be an actual loss since he was there. AH: Have you ever met Chappelle again since, or was that it? DS: No, that was it. Five or six years ago, I was in Adelaide, Australia and Chappelle was doing a show there. They got us tickets and we got to go backstage and meet him. That would be the worst thing in the world. He does comedy, too. Want to come say hello? When I opened for him, though, I was a bit annoyed because — this is a bit narcissistic, of course — I wanted some proof that that had happened, so I found the lineup board to take a photo of it. I grew up watching stand-up since the age of five. I used to just love the straight stand-up, with one man or woman on stage with a microphone and their jokes. This is me, these are my opinions and these are my jokes. Those are always the shows that I remembered more. The shows I remember so vividly, however, are the ones that sucker punch you. I love fucking with the audience like that. The reason I wanted to do that is that I wanted the audience to go through those feelings. The audience can laugh at any moment, because anything can be funny, no matter how dark. I wanted to catch everyone off their toes.

Edinburgh Festival Magazine 2009. For all we know, it will be a sincere wasteland in a year. Hilarious…There is something effortlessly charming about Daniel Sloss… Devastatingly intelligent… he makes you think about yourself and your relationships, and then side-swipes you with a brilliant gag. It was right at the end of the tour. America is so big. Between are different ways to do it, too.
